This detachment comprised three Bristol Freighters, and operated almost independently from the remainder of the Squadron at Singapore. engineers around remote areas of the country. By this time No. 41 Squadron's Bristol Freighters were becoming outdated, and historian Margaret McClure has written that they were the "slowest military aircraft in South-east Asia".
