In May 1942 he went with all the Dutch officers into captivity, first being incarcerated in a hospital in Aachen, then in Nuremberg, Germany. After a few months he was released because he was over 60 years of age. Following a search for him during the beginning of the liberation in June 1944, he went into hiding in 43: 297:. He was promoted to lieutenant general and began organizing a new Royal Netherlands East Indies Army. He kept a diary throughout the war. In February 1946 he suffered a stroke in Eindhoven, retiring two months later. He died in Breda on 15 August 1948. His wife died a year later. 332: 532: 517: 379: 222:
