Accordingly, the Chairmanship of ASEAN rotates annually, based on the alphabetical order of the English names of ASEAN member states. The member state assuming the Chairmanship holds it for one calendar year, and chairs the ASEAN Summit and related summits, the ASEAN Coordinating Council, the three ASEAN Community Councils, relevant ASEAN Sectoral Ministerial Bodies and senior officials, and the Committee of Permanent Representatives. Many of the visiting leaders had to be evacuated from the venue by helicopter to a nearby military airbase, although none were injured. The protests were part of the 2008 Thai political crisis and were not believed to be directed at ASEAN leaders, but rather at Thailand's government. 857: 1063: 1464: 1201: 716: 1231: 913: 633: 1037: 2730: 2208: 1770: 1117: 1091: 747: 1175: 887: 661: 1286: 2905: 2831: 2764: 2662: 2464: 2254: 1945: 1804: 1668: 1498: 1396: 1260: 978: 2696: 2425: 2296: 2118: 1992: 1838: 1736: 1634: 1532: 1430: 606: 2868: 2338: 2076: 1903: 1566: 593: 573: 2383: 2034: 1600: 801: 3206:, although seeking invitation, was reluctant to accede to the treaty, claiming that it was out of date and might conflict with obligations and rights it had under other treaties.
