Mather became a firm supporter of craft, serving as President of the Ontario Crafts Foundation in 1972 and the founding treasurer of the OCC. After Mather's death in a plane crash in 1977, the OCC honoured Mather through the establishment of the John Mather Award, which is administered by the executive committee of the OCC. Originally awarded to three individuals annually, the award is now given to one individual each year, a change that has increased the already high level of prestige associated with the award.
