He was a graduate of Harvard college and was admitted to the bar in 1834, and in 1840 established himself in the practice of his profession in this place, becoming a leading lawyer of the state. He was a man of fine literary attainments and a musician of great ability. He represented the town most worthily in the state legislature during the years 1850 1852 and 1854 and in 1874 was chosen Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of N.H., which office he held until 1876. He also filled many other offices of public trust and responsibility. He was for many years organist of the South Parish (Unitarian), church. His varied attainments and accomplishments made him a central figure in social life whose duties, so far as was compatible with his profession, he never neglected. 215: 272: 21: 79:
