in the general practice of law. From 1915 to 1922, he served as Commissioner for the Harlem Irrigation District. He served as the Blaine County Attorney from 1922 to 1925 and worked as an Assistant Attorney General in 1941. The following year, Bottomly became the Montana Attorney General 1942 to 1949. In 1949, he became an Associate Justice of the Montana Supreme Court. He was a veteran for the US Army from World War I.
