Menard and he goes, 'is that the Menard character? He's a total nerd!' I said, 'Sorry, Jim,' and he walks away mutering, 'What the Hell?' And then Dean Redman plays a character called Woeste, named after Peter Woeste, our other DP. Each character has its own little quirks. I mean, Woeste shoot and kills the Unas, which causes all the unrest. He screws it up for everybody. So both of the DPs had their own complaints about the characters named for them! Of course, I just shrugged and said, 'Guys, it's just the way it happened, I swear.'" As if he didn't have enough to do writing and directing to episode and teasing the DPs, DeLuise took it upon himself to invent a new language. "'Enemy Mine' was when I created an Unas dictionary, which is available through Kate Ritter's site . She put it in her Lexicon. There's about twenty-five words or so that I made up. I tried to anticipate all the words that they would need, then added a few so they are speaking a real language. The words actually mean something. I told Alex and Patrick , 'You gotta say the right words because there are a few people out there who are going to go 'Hey! That's not right!' If course, right in the middle of these huge speeches, Alex Zahara - Iron Shirt - would be talking to the masses, and then go, 'aw ****. What's that line again?' He'd be doing this rough animal-like gruff voice one second, and then would lapse into his own sweet voice when he couldn't get his mouth round the Unas language - which cracked us all up. It was funny to hear this little human voice come out of this big Unas. The bloopers are so great. I really hope one day they'll let us put them on the DVDs". Are you listening MGM! Fans the world over are waiting...

Peter wrote it. The SGC, or members of the military, are looking for an off-world naquadah mine. They think they found one, and it's while they're basically searching this mine area that one of their members is attacked. SG-1 comes to check out what's happened, and of course it turns out to be the Unas. In order to deal with the threat, Daniel suggests they use Chaka as an intermediary. So the character of Chaka comes back, and with Daniel's help, tries to mediate a peace between the Unas and the military. It's essentially almost like a cowboy/Native American type of setup where it's their land, and we come in, and we need the naquadah, and while we may respect their needs up to a certain point, the bottom line is our needs will take precedence over theirs. So Daniel has his work cut out for him in an attempt to broker a truce.
500:, in which lions attack the workers constructing a bridge, with DeLuise instead imagining the Unas as attacking Stargate Command personnel who are attempting the mine the land. Early on in the writing process, DeLuise knew that he wanted the difficulty in communicating with the Unas to be at the heart of the story, and later described "the whole episode is about communicating with beings who don't speak English, which we always gloss-over because everyone speaks English, because otherwise ever episode would be about 'what did he say?', so it's a gimme on our show that pretty much everybody speaks English". He therefore decided to expanded upon the Unas language "there's about twenty-five words or so that I made up. I tried to anticipate all the words that they would need", adding to his Unas dictionary as writing continued. 433:
provide them with food. Suddenly, they hear gunfire and the three of them run towards it to investigate. An Unas has been killed by Stargate Command forces whilst trying to retrieve a necklace that he had lost in their early battle. The Unas, having heard the gunfire have assembled their forces and prepare to attack the Stargate Command forces that have now retreated back to the main base camp and are preparing to evacuate through the Stargate once more. The Unas arrive in full force and surround the camp, revealing their numbers to be unlike anything Stargate Command previously expected. Daniel once again pleads with the Unas forces that they can work together to fight the Goa'uld, and by convincing Edwards and the Stargate Command forces to lay down the weapons, the Unas relent and spare the humans.

resources from? Where are we getting our naquadah?' We decided we must have an off-world mine, we we must be moving this stuff, and from that we started to spin this story. We also wanted to address the repercussions of what we did in an episode two years ago called "Beast of Burden", where we liberated Chaka and his planet from slavery. We wanted to see how they had grown since then and this episode was basically about going back and finding that Chaka had become far more civilised, to the extent where he helps us broker, or attempt to broker peace with the Unas who are indigenous to the planet where we're mining the naquaduah.

Trek syndrome that everyone in authority, apart from our heroes, are complete fools. So the colonel just wants to blast everything in sight and a visiting general more or less wants to do the same. Essentially this is a Western, with the invading Humans seeing the Unas as savages and wanting to move them off somewhere less inconvenient. Daniel is the 'Indian lover' trying to help both sides, but being the 'worth it' "pain in the ass" he manages.to sort things out. I just wish someone had shown these military types a John Ford Western in training, and we wouldn't have had this trouble. 6.
583:. Smith had unsuccessfully auditioned for the part of Daniel Jackson back in 1997, and was friends with producer Michael Greenburg who had looked for a way to add Smith to the show. The actor commented that he "didn't have the best audition. I was quite surprised when they said at the end of the day, 'Yeah, we want you to do this.'" Smith described the incarnation of Lorne in "Enemy Mine" as a "surveyor-type character", with the character later being reworked to be "much more military guy". Dion Johnstone had previously portrayed the 688: 1460:
However, we need the naquadah. the mine to power spaceships that will help us defend Earth against a Goa'uld attack. Daniel suggests we bring in Chaka to act on our behalf as a liaison to his fellow Unas. Chaka has become far more sophisticated since we last saw him . He's dressed in Human-type clothes and speaks better English. Dion Johnstone was performing onstage when we did this episode and therefore was unable to reprise his role of_ Chaka. So we asked Patrick Curne to play the part and he did a terrific job.

This also gave DeLuise the opportunity to put another character in charge of the operation, which he felt would be interesting for the character of Daniel Jackson, who would not be able to rely on O'Neill, and instead have to earn the trust of the new officer in charge. As both sides take casualties, O'Neill is thrown aside, but Daniel pleas in the Unas language for the being not to continue its attack. The Unas seemingly listens and they withdraw from the forest. Edwards argues to go after them, but O'Neill orders everyone back to Stargate Command.

to mine a site containing a rich vein of naquadah. Daniel has the bright idea of going to get Chaka, who we last saw in Beast of Burden. In that episode, he was dealing with a civil war situation between Humans and enslaved Unas. Apparently, Chaka helped resolve that issue, so we think he's the perfect one to hopefully negotiate a peace on this planet as well.

DeLuise then came up with what would be the ending of his story, the idea that an enormous army of Unas would surround and trap the humans at the mining camp from escaping through the Stargate.
