Câest lâappĂąt dâun gain plus important qui pousse Charles Wood, un constructeur de navire installĂ© Ă la pointe ouest de lâĂźle dâOrlĂ©ans (Sainte-PĂ©tronille) Ă imaginer un stratagĂšme pour Ă©viter de payer les tarifs requis. En 1824, il construit le Columbus, un quatre mĂąts jaugeant 3690 tonneaux. Le navire moyen alors construit Ă QuĂ©bec faisait 200 tonneaux. Construit en bois Ă©quarri, il devait ĂȘtre dĂ©montĂ© une fois arrivĂ©, Ă©vitant ainsi les droits dâentrĂ©e, le bateau proprement dit nâĂ©tant pas taxĂ©s. Une fois le navire dĂ©chargĂ©, on dĂ©cide de tenter un nouveau voyage, mais le Columbus Ă©tait conçu pour nâeffectuer quâune seule traversĂ©e. Câest pourquoi il coula en arrivant au Nouveau Brunswick lâannĂ©e suivante. LâĂ©quipage est sauvĂ© in extremis. Wood ne sâavoue pas vaincu. En 1825, toujours Ă son chantier de lâĂźle, il rĂ©cidive en construisant le Baron of Renfrew. Cette fois-ci, il jauge 5294 tonneaux. Un mastodonte. Un fois de plus, câest lâĂ©chec.
