121:불화(佛畵)는 불탑(佛塔), 불상(佛像) 등과 함께 불교의 신앙 대상이며, 그 제작 형태에 따라 탱화, 경화(經畵), 벽화(壁畵) 등으로 분류할 수 있다. 특히 탱화는 복장식(服裝式), 점안식(點眼式) 등의 신앙 의식 절차를 거쳐 불단(佛壇)의 주요 신앙대상물로 봉안된다. 우리나라 전통사찰에 전해오는 탱화는 불화의 주류를 이루고 있으며, 불화 제작을 담당하는 장인을 특별히 금어(金魚), 화승(畵僧), 화사(畵師), 화원(畵員)이라 부르기도 하였다.
