Meldolla in Verbindung gebracht. Der Holzschnitt gehört zu einer Gruppe von vier Blättern Meldollas in dieser Technik, die in der früheren Literatur als anonyme Formschnitte nach Parmigianino galten. Darüber hinaus ist es das einzige Blatt, das sein Monogramm trägt. Stilistisch gehört der Holzschnitt der späteren Schaffensphase Meldollas an. Das Blatt ist in einer verfeinerten, hochentwickelten Holzschnitttechnik ausgeführt. Formale Elemente wie die Figurenauffassung, die Physiognomien der Soldaten und die bewegte, fliessende Behandlung der Draperien sind charakteristisch für Meldollas Stil der 1550er Jahre und machen die Zuschreibung an ihn überzeugend. Während die Repoussoirfigur des kauernden Kriegers mit dem Schild sich auf mehreren Gemälden Tizians dieser Epoche wiederfindet, sind die ungebändigte Dynamik und die dramatische Expressivität der Darstellung ganz eigenständige Wesenszüge der Kunst Meldollas. Ausgezeichneter Druck mit der Einfassungslinie. Verso geglättete Hängefalte, geringfügig fleckig, alte Annotation in Feder verso, sonst sehr schönes Exemplar. Selten.
