C'est dans son Grand Commentaire - type de commentaire réservé aux esprits scientifiques, aux philosophes - sur le De Anima qu'Averroès, approfondissant la doctrine aristotélicienne de l'intellect agent, expose sa fameuse théorie de l'unité de l'intelligence dans l'espèce humaine, théorie qui devait être condamnée en 1270 par l'évêque de Paris.
