Fichtelgebirges, zu dessen Füßen das Gemeindegebiet liegt. Die Farben Silber und Schwarz weisen auf die einstigen Burggrafen von Nürnberg und späteren Markgrafen von Brandenburg-Bayreuth hin, die seit dem 14. Jahrhundert die Herrschaftsinhaber im Gemeindegebiet waren. Die beiden Bärentatzen stammen aus dem Wappen von Vordorf und sind dem Wappen der Herren von Hertenberg entnommen. Das Gemeindegebiet gehörte zu deren Rodungsherrschaft mit der Burg Schönbrunn als Zentrum. Das Gericht Schönbrunn kam 1344 an die Burggrafen von Nürnberg. Von der Familie sind zwei Wappen überliefert, von denen das eine mit den Bärentatzen als Hauptwappen gilt. Die Tatzen weisen zugleich auf den letzten Bären im Fichtelgebirge hin, der von einem Förster aus Vordorf 1769 erlegt wurde und den Vordorfern den Spitznamen �Die Bären� verschaffte. Der Steinmetzwinkel bezieht sich auf den Bergbau, die weiter verarbeitenden Gewerke und die Granitindustrie im Gemeindegebiet. Hammerwerke sind in Vordorf bereits 1398 bezeugt. Eisenerzabbau und Zinnschmelze werden bis ins 19. Jahrhundert betrieben. Um 1900 gewinnt der Granitabbau zunehmend an Bedeutung, bis er kurz nach 1945 eingestellt wurde.
