Townsend. She was bound for Santa Rosalia, and the captain had challenged the captain of the S.G. Wilder to a race. Both ships were being towed to sea by the Goliah, and the Garms veered into the Wilder, which caused significant damage, delaying the Wilder several days, spoiling the race (p. 232). The Garm was caught in a storm in 1914. Hurricane-force winds swept off the Pacific Coast in January 1914 after having departed Coupleville with a full cargo of mine timbers headed for Santa Rosalia, Mexico, captained by F. Turloff with a crew of 10 men. She drifted within 600 yards of Vancouver Island, and its masts, rudder and steering gear had been torn away by the storm. The crew got away in a lifeboat and were rescued by the Snohomish. The Garms was later repaired and rerigged as the Golden State, owned by the Rolph Navigation & Coal Co. (p. 248). Later the Golden State was sold to L.A. Scott of Mobile, and was lost by fire at sea (p. 307). (Source: Newell, Gordon, ed. "The H.W. McCurdy Marine History of the Pacific Northwest."
