The others were called Ru, Jun, Guan and Ge wares. The Hallwyl collection contains Jun and Ding ware, and a Longquan vase that imitates Guan ware (VII B.a.c.2) â but no Guan or Ge wares. This dish was first thrown and then placed over a one-piece mould to give it a sharply inclined profile, and its rim cut to give six lobes. The shape and incised decoration (of scrolling lotus) imitate precious metal, probably silver. Early Ding wares were fired in separate saggars (firing boxes, used to protect wares in the kiln), each piece having been carved individually. The glaze shows little streaks of darker-coloured glaze, where it has run in firing. This effect is known as âtear dropsâ to connoisseurs.
