Экспедиция, руководителем которой был полковник Генерального штаба Ю. А. Сосновский, состояла из девяти человек: капитана Матусовского — топографа, доктора Павла Яковлевича Пясецкого — научного сотрудника, переводчиков с русского и китайского языков, троих казаков и фотографа экспедиции Адольфа Эразмовича Боярского. Экспедиция отправилась из Санкт-Петербурга в Шанхай через Улан-Батор (Монголия), Пекин и Тяньцзинь и затем последовала по маршруту вдоль реки Янцзы, по Великому шелковому пути, проходя через оазис Хами к озеру Зайсан, обратно в Россию.
