Lealtad”. Luego de eso, ingresó a las filas Constitucionalistas y fue miembro del Estado Mayor del general Jesús Carranza, hermano de don Venustiano. Convencido liberal, fue un elemento clave para la pacificación del país durante el período post-revolucionario (1920-1938), caracterizándose por ejercer una política de negociación y conciliación, muy poco característica de los generales de aquella época, que le ganó popularidad y prestigio entre los ciudadanos. Habiéndose enfrentado además, y desarticulado, a múltiples cacicazgos. Entre otros, de manera determinante contribuyó a poner fin al predominio radical de Tomás Garrido Canabal y sus “Camisas Rojas”, en Tabasco. Por eso, en 1944, el Partido de la Revolución Mexicana (PRM) lo consideró entre sus prospectos para la candidatura presidencial. Sin embargo, como no era un elemento que garantizara la continuidad de los intereses creados ni las políticas frentepopulistas que desde el cardenismo prevalecían en el país, fue sorpresivamente eliminado de la contienda. El entonces presidente Manuel Avila Camacho lo llamó personalmente para anunciarle que el designado era otro, y ofrecerle a cambio de su “disciplina” un cargo en el gobierno. Él rechazó desde luego el ofrecimiento y, aunque renunció a su postulación por consideración a la amistad que lo unía al presidente, también se retiró temporalmente de las actividades públicas, no sin antes denunciar en un manifiesto lo anti-democrático de tal procedimiento. En 1951, impulsó un movimiento dentro del Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI), para que éste eligiera de manera democrática a su candidato presidencial, lo que motivó su expulsión del partido oficial y que fuera el candidato de la Federación de Partidos del Pueblo Mexicano (FPPM), una agrupación identificada con los principios del liberalismo, que fue creada en 1946 por sus partidarios, con el objeto de conciliar el proyecto social de la Revolución con las prácticas democráticas. Su programa de gobierno consideraba, entre otras cosas: dotar de mayores facultades al poder Legislativo para controlar al presidente de la República, apoyar a la iniciativa privada, acabar con los monopolios, terminar el paternalismo gubernamental y eliminar el burocratismo que ahoga la acción del trabajo y la iniciativa del ciudadano; y, adelantándose a su época, propuso la ciudadanización de los órganos electorales. Amigo de Lázaro Cárdenas, nunca abrigó, sin embargo, las mismas tendencias ideológicas del expresidente. Víctima de fraude en las elecciones de 1952, se negó terminantemente a encabezar una revuelta, como le proponían los comunistas y los cardenistas, y en cambio intentó acordar un gobierno de coalición con el candidato declarado ganador, Adolfo Ruiz Cortines. Intento de fracasó por el autoritarismo imperante, desatándose a partir de entonces la represión más violenta que haya sufrido en México partido político alguno. En 1954 le fue cancelado el registro a la FPPM y en 1955 se desalojaron sus oficinas en todo el país y se prohibió toda reunión de los henriquistas. Sin renegar nunca de sus convicciones y negándose a negociar con el gobierno, que le llegó a ofrecer todas las ventajas y prebendas a cambio del reconocimiento de “su derrota”, murió Henríquez Guzmán en la ciudad de México el 29 de agosto de 1972.
