129:Ähnlich liegen die Dinge im Wallis, wo der Bischof von Sitten als «PREFECT(us) CO(munitatis) VALES(ii)» auf einem Doppeltaler von 1501 seinem von der Mitra überhöhten Wappenschild nur den Bischofsstab und das Schwert als Zeichen seiner geistlichen und seiner reichsfürstlichen Würde unterlegt hat, während die Republik Wallis auf ihrem Siegel von 1582 mit der Aufschrift «S(igillum) REIP(ublice) PATRIE VALLESY» auf den oberen Schildrand ihres hier erstmals begegnenden Sternenwappens den Doppeladler gesetzt hat. Letzterer wurde zweifellos vom geistlichen Reichsfürstentum entlehnt. Der Sittener Fürstbischof Hildebrand von Riedmatten beschritt hierauf den Weg des Kompromisses und bildete aus seinem persönlichen Wappenschild, jenem der Republik und jenem der Stadt Sitten eine Wappendreiheit, die er dem Doppeladler des Reiches aufgelegt hat, ohne es freilich dabei zu unterlassen, seinen Schild mit der Mitra zu bekrönen und mit Hirtenstab und Schwert zu unterlegen.
