Das Bild zeigt eine Mauer mit geschlossenem Tor und einen Turm, daneben ein kleines Gebäude mit Kreuzen auf dem Dach. Die Mauer und der Turm stellen wohl die Burg dar, auf der die Herren von Kunstat und die Herren von Ebneth saßen, das Gebäude mit den Kreuzen die Ortskirche. In einem Siegel um 1450 taucht ein zweites Gebäude in Schrägansicht auf, das Stadttor ist seitdem geöffnet. Das Wappenbild erscheint auch in der Bamberger Vasallentafel von 1603 und in einer Zeichnung von 1812.

Kunstadt wird erstmals 1059 urkundlich beim Übergang aus dem Erbe der Grafen von Schweinfurt an das Bistum Bamberg erwähnt. Seitdem ist Burgkunstadt ein hochstiftischer Amtssitz, der 1325 als Stadt bezeichnet wird, eine Stadtrechtsverleihung ist allerdings nicht bezeugt. Aus dem Jahr 1350 ist
