On the morning of July 20, Adam de Villiers landed with a force of 210 men at Don Som. The troops landed on the eastern side of the fort. The French cannon at Don Thip fired their last shot and the Siamese commander was killed. When the French showed signs of readying to attack, the Siamese troops fled. This was the end of a week-long military campaign in which between 1,500 and 2,000 Siamese fought against 400 French soldiers. Adam de Villiers claimed that 300 Siamese were killed while the French lost only one man and less than 10 were wounded! The capture of Don Som became the bloodiest event of the Franco-Siamese crisis of 1893. 695: 723: 707: 602:, was acknowledged by his government to have been the responsible official, although he was initially acquitted of wrongdoing in a trial in March 1894. A "Franco-Siamese Mixed Court" was subsequently convened in June 1894. The court determined that Phra Yot had brought extra forces to surround the house in Kien Ket occupied by the ill Grosgurin, outnumbering his small Vietnamese militia; that Grosgurin and those Vietnamese who had not managed to escape had been killed and the house subsequently set on fire on the orders of Phra Yot. 392: 367: 232: 221: 210: 199: 157: 683: 634: 380: 527:, where Grosgurin, confined to his sickbed, had encamped with his militia. The commissioner had apparently been instructed by Siamese government representatives to "compel their retirement, by fighting, if necessary, to the utmost of their strength". The ambush resulted in the razing of the village and the killing of Grosgurin and 17 Vietnamese. 649:. In 1896, France signed a treaty with Britain defining the border between Laos and British territory in Upper Burma. The Kingdom of Laos became a protectorate, initially placed under the Governor General of Indochina in Hanoi.
