From I-96 southeast into downtown Detroit, Grand River Avenue remained under state control as an unsigned state trunkline highway, though some BS I-96 trailblazers in downtown Detroit remained afterwards. Most of these leftover BS I-96 trailblazers were removed around 2000 after the City of Detroit transferred maintenance of state trunkline highways within the city to the state, though a few trailblazers remained along downtown Detroit streets that remained under city jurisdiction into the 2010s. In 2004, the state transferred several blocks at the eastern end of Grand River Avenue to the City of Detroit. State jurisdiction now ended at the corner of Grand River Avenue, Middle Street, and Cass Avenue.
