The village arose in the early 19th century because the Brewster River was well suited to provide water power to industry. Its earliest settler, John Brewster, arrived in the 1780s, and the village was incorporated in 1827. Its 19th-century growth resulted in a significant number of Greek Revival houses. Around the turn of the 20th century the village gained a number of fine Victorian and Colonial Revival buildings.
