He married Jessie Margaret White on 20 March 1879; they had two children during their marriage. He died on 8 August 1926 in Hobart, Tasmania, at the age of 79.

He had four sons (one, Dr. J. C. Ellis, killed in Belgium in June 1917) and a daughter. He died on 21 December 1920 in Benara, South Australia at the age of 71.
