During this period, Kataeb led many social struggles to consolidate national cohesion and promote individual liberties and social welfare. Syrian rule in Lebanon were systematically muzzled. Christian parties paid the highest price for their resistance to Syrian hegemony and their leaders were either eliminated, exiled, or imprisoned.
