251: 222: 184: 637: 153:, Koch immigrated as a toddler with his family to the United States. His architectural career began at the age of 16 when he worked for early Milwaukee architect, G. W. Mygatt. He enlisted in the 269: 218:, as well as nearby Pabst Building (which was razed in 1980). When completed it was one of the tallest buildings in the United States, and it remains Milwaukee's most recognizable landmark. 259: 118: 232:(1882–83), 1034 N. 4th St., an "iconic" example of Koch's work, resembles a school as it was built during a period when Koch was designing many Milwaukee schools. 44: 401: 158: 627: 597: 202:. The style is characterized by semicircular arches, symmetry, round towers with pointed caps, copious use of stone, and generally simple facades. 299: 303: 214:. Reflecting his own (and Milwaukee's) German Heritage, Koch took his design inspiration for City Hall from German buildings such as the 315: 165:'s staff. After the war Koch returned to Milwaukee, where he formed a partnership with Mygatt until 1870, when he started his own firm. 632: 338: 328: 172:. The latter also became an architect, joining his father's firm in the 1890s and helping with the design of the Milwaukee City Hall. 344: 354: 239: 279: 117: 547: 406: 250: 289: 484: 283: 195: 602: 380:"National Register of Historic Places Registration: Stutsman County Courthouse and Sheriff's Residence/Jail" 273: 229: 199: 221: 43: 622: 617: 461: 263: 134: 169: 104: 572: 211: 456: 183: 154: 150: 385: 429: 309: 215: 188: 379: 522: 348: 332: 293: 162: 130: 611: 319: 489: 17: 235:
