It seems initially he did volunteer, believing it would save American lives to do so, but throughout the third film his flashbacks continually show him saying, "I can't..." and throwing down his dogtags in response to Albert Finney's question, "Are you with the program?" So, to me, it seems he was brainwashed and then forced through water torture into entering the program after several days without sleep; and not even knowing the real purpose of joining... (as it turns out, he did not save American lives... instead took other innocent lives.) So, isn't the suspense deepened by the viewer's knowledge that Albert Finney's character was STILL lying to him at the end... trying to convince him that "you came to us"... well, yes, he did... before sleep deprivation, hynosis, and torture... and then he couldn't leave. I even went to the NYC World Science Festival's website where Dr. Tononi actually spoke on Bourne's amnesia... but could find no info on whether he was forced to complete the training. I would have put this on the Bourne page but didn't want to mess it up, and I am not sure how commenting on Knowledge (XXG) works. I just thought we should give the character credit if he truly ended up "Jason Bourne" by psychological force, and not by knowledgable consent. What do you think?
