The appointment gave Vittorio Gorresio his first experience as a member of the editorial board of a mass-circulation daily newspaper: it was an important and formative period for him on several different levels. Neither Alvaro nor Patti were overtly political journalists, however, and after a few months Gorresio was obliged to quit the news desk when he was conscripted for military service and promoted to the rank of captain.
