Appalachians. Using the Terrain view of Google Maps this appears to be the case. This appears to be a series of relatively low spots in the various ridges of the Appalachians. That is clearly the case with the Narrows, where US40 Alt appears to be using Wills creek as a guide through the eastern half of the range. It also appears to be routed through a canyon between Frostburg and Allegany Grove, though Google Maps doesn't have a name in this view or the waterway that carved the canyon. The summit (I know that's a western US term, sorry I don't know the appropriate word for Appalachia) is either by the jct with SR-546 or near the the western terminus, both are about 2800 ft per google. Do these summits have a name, is one of these the briefly mentioned Savage Mountain? Is this the highest point along US-40 through the mountains? (It appears so extending outwards on either side, US 40 drops to 1000 ft fairly rapidly. Anyways, you get my point, this is the kind of stuff I like to see for mountain roads.
