hi, I am a fan trying to create a page for Nepali film director Hem Raj BC who directed popular movie Jerryy & Hostel (2013 film). It seems that most of his works have a wikipedia but his bio was not found here. Could some of you guys help me as it has not been able to pass for conflict of interest. Kirat Mundhum (also Kirati Mundhum), are the stories recited/sung by the shamans (called 'Fedangma/Samba') of the Kirati ethnic groups of the Indian subcontinent: Limbu, Rai, Sunuwar and Yakkha peoples.

Since creation in 2008, Kirat Mundhum has been described as the religion of the Kirats of Nepal, not a bunch of "stories", until this IP edit in October.

Furthermore, the Kirats appear to be a Himalayan people, mostly of Nepal; changing their territory to "Indian subcontinent" (here), makes about as much sense as saying they're from "the Eurasian continent". Formerly, it just said "of Nepal and India" (until this edit added a bunch of countries not supported by the following ref). Probably it should just go back to saying, "Nepal and India" again (or "northern"/"Himalayan" India, or some such). Mathglot (talk) 02:09, 8 January 2019 (UTC)

The population data for villages in Nepal that are provided in articles seems to be very much out of date or inaccurate, according to a sampling of a few in Sindhupalchok District, namely:

• Choukati & Maneshwara — data for 1991.
• Pagretar — data for 1991, and unverified data for 2001.
• Pedku — unverified data for 2001 or 2013.
• Tauthali — unverified data for 2001 or 2013, and unverified data for unstated year.

Today I have updated each of these with data from the 2011 census (the most recent one).

I suggest that each village in Nepal with a Knowledge article be updated to provide number of people (men and women) and number of households. This can be done by following the examples on the abovementioned pages that I have already updated, using a format like:

Obviously the data in bold need to be changed for other villages in Sindhupalchok District, and various additional entries would need to be adapted for other districts.

This could be done entirely manually. Alternatively, some clever person might be able to create a convenient template like {{Nepal-village-population|2011|Tauthali|p=2762|f=1507|m=1255|h=776}}. Ideally some extremely clever person would create a bot, but with the variation in spelling of the village names, this seems impractical.

By the way, I still think the issue of verifying "official" English names of Nepali villages needs more attention.

After 2015, the Provinces of Nepal came to be. The five old articles for the development regions still exist, and they're generally poorly cited or just stubs. I suggest that someone with more expertise to just merge all of the necessary information from the articles to the main Development regions of Nepal article and then redirect all of them there. If there is some information that pertains to the new provinces, it can be added to those articles instead.

The old development region articles:

Eastern Development Region, Nepal

Central Development Region, Nepal

Western Development Region, Nepal

Mid-Western Development Region, Nepal

Far-Western Development Region, Nepal

Could some brave soul please take a look at this page. Seriously, it has to be one of the worst pages I have seen on WP. I think it needs a total re-write, massive update, or revert to about 2010, or earlier.

True, but I have had quite a bit to do with some Indian and Pakistani ones! 😣 Facepalm There was this I did yesterday too.
Could be a case, which I've seen before, of a page with a similar name being 'hijacked' because a newby editor doesn't know how to start a new page, so they just change a 'John Smith' page to be about another 'John Smith' entirely. Yadukuha had content relating to 'Videha Municipality' (which is apparently Bideha, Dhanusa) dumped into it, for example. A lot of IP editors from that region don't seem to agree on the difference between a village and a town, or city, too. 220 of 02:21, 7 March 2020 (UTC)

Pegship, I am looking at your edits to Rugha, and I'm thinking you might have been thrown off by the outdated tenses. Rugha was a VDC in Rukum District of Rapti Zone, Mid-Western Development Region. The VDC by this name does not exist anymore, though it is likely there is an eponymous village that would not pass GNG or GEOLAND somewhere within the territories of the former VDC. Currently, the whole area (area, not a named place encompassing the area) is a part of Tribeni Rural Municipality, Western Rukum District, Karnali Pradesh.

So, my thoughts are (and it comes out of an almost complete ignorance regarding Knowledge practices on the issue): the article should describe Rugha as a former VDC in former Rukum District, former Rapti Zone, former Mid-Western Development Region. Under this scheme, the template in question would still be relevant. The fact that the area is now under Tribeni of West Rukum, Karnali should be mentioned only as an afterthought. The template {{West Rukum District}} could still be included since that is where the area now falls under. Instead of the populated places category(I do not know if all geo articles must be in a populated places category), I would suggest Category:Former VDCs in Western Rukum District which would be a child of Category:VDCs of Rukum District. Stubsorting, I think, is fine as is, though, now that I think about it, something like "This article about a in Karnali Pradesh of Nepal is a stub" might be better (That would be seven specific cats for some 4000 articles; not that stub-sorting is the most-pertinent of the updates those articles are missing right now).

Hi there! I appreciate any education on this topic. I have been assigning stub templates and categories, but not usually editing the articles' content (figured I or someone else would get to that eventually). The "populated places" category is hit-or-miss - some district categories have one and some don't - and any re-arranging, renaming, or creation of categories such as you suggested would provide a great deal of clarity. If the Rukum and Nawalpuri District templates should still exist, I will withdraw the TfD, go on merrily stub sorting, and leave actual geography to those who know more about it. Cheers! Pegship, I think that might be best, at least for now. I have reverted Raju Babu's modification of the template, and will wait for them and hopefully others to join.

If you will withdraw the nomination, I will start a new discussion on standardising all district templates, along with exceptions. We do have a lack of clarity on what to do with the VDCs in other districts also; some districts templates seem to have deleted all evidence of prior divisions, while some had them moved to a historical subgroup last I checked. We don't seem to have the quorum of editors to establish consensus or implement them. That's why I have been reluctant to dive into anything major. I will formulate a proposal and go by the WP:SILENCE route if need be.

Hi Captain - I think a non-stub template might be more appropriate (like the district template currently under discussion). Stub types follow a specific pattern and process, and I can tell you that a VDC-level stub type is not currently needed for stub sorting purposes. The stub sorting project is currently re-sorting articles from zones into provinces, and after that we'll look at the numbers for districts. If you feel strongly about creating any kind of stub, I invite you to discuss it over at Knowledge:WikiProject Stub sorting. Pursuant to changes made in the administrative divisions of Nepal in 2015, and due to the very large number of geographic stub types thereof, the Stub sorting Project has created stub templates by province and district and is in the process of emptying the zone-geo-stub categories. I think we should do nothing about maps until reliable WP:THIRDPARTY sources do.

We seem to have jumped the gun already with Kalapani territory, which Knowledge maps are showing coloured yellow. I don't know who made this decision and what sources they used. I was thinking of taking it to WP:NPOVN at some point, when Nepal began to amplify its claims even further. Our practice has generally been to colour the disputed areas as per the administering country. Only with regard to Kashmir do we use hatched areas, because THIRDPARTY sources do so. -- Kautilya3 (talk) 10:49, 22 May 2020 (UTC)

As for the area, it doesn't matter particularly, as long as it is stated whether it includes claimed areas. We need to be judicious about it though. Kautilya3, I would just like the consensus figured out on all of these issues, whatever it may be. I have stopped reverting for the time being, as in the absence of others to back me up, I would be edit-warring against immediate local consensus in those articles.

These things are not solved in a day. For example, the China-Tajikistan border was altered in 2011 and I started changing the maps to reflect this on Knowledge only in 2020 (following the CIA World Factbook). Geographyinitiative (talk) 11:01, 22 May 2020 (UTC)

The only convention I'm aware of regarding disputed territories on maps is that used in the country infoboxes, which is to colour any claimed territory that the country doesn't actually control as light green instead of the regular dark green. As for other maps, I suspect it's mostly a case by case basis. Could you link to some of the new maps you've seen?

As for area, we shouldn't update it based on this single declaration, that's WP:RECENTISM and doesn't therefore reflect a consensus among sources. CMD (talk) 11:05, 22 May 2020 (UTC)

Indeed, the current Jammu and Kashmir maps are ideal. No colouring, no shading, no hatching. Just dotted lines around the claimed areas.

Usedtobecool, every day we revert dozens of Indian/Pakistani editors pushing their countries' brandings on the others' territories. Nepalese editors doing it is nothing new for us. What justification do we use? "Unsourced edit" is the easiest, because most such edits never bother giving a source or write edit summaries justifying their edits. If they give national sources, we demand WP:NPOV or WP:THIRDPARTY. Every Knowledge editor is supposed to follow WP:NPOV. It doesn't matter what country they are from, or whether they are experienced or inexperienced, registered or unregistered. Note also that Knowledge doesn't have any special policies for countries or governments. They are sources just like any other. Kautilya3, but the NPOV or SPS dispute would still come under valid content dispute, no? I was confident enough reverting when the edits were unsourced, but then they had government sources, then national papers, now Indian and international papers as well. So, I would need to point to a consensus to justify continued reversion after that. It is not our problem. The WP:BURDEN is on the editors making the changes to demonstrate WP:V and WP:NPOV. Since the Indian and Nepalese claims neutralise each other, how are they able to give priority to one over the other? It is their problem to demonstrate and convince us.

If we run up against 3RR, we ask for help from other editors at the project pages or NPOV editors we know. If they exceed limits, we request page protection. Once we bring it to the admin attention, they take care of things quite well. -- Kautilya3 (talk) 13:13, 22 May 2020 (UTC)

I agree, something like this needs to be standardized on all pages with the "New" map. The map used by the government of Nepal is non-neutral by definition and I think should not be used as per WP:NPOVN. For examples, maps that reflect the Indian government's territorial claims do not appear on the India page. There are edits being done to the Infobox as well, which counter template norms used by other countries, there is a discussion there too on disputed territories which was helpful to go through. In my experience waves of edits such as those pushing this new info will subside in time. The reason will no doubt vary per the edit being reverted. There will also be positive and constructive edits emerging from this event. Territorial disputes of India and Nepal can be expanded, and perhaps we might now even be able to create a map for it. We recently had a preliminary discussion at #Nomination for deletion of Template:Rukum District on what to do regarding District templates. It seems to me, clarity on the subject would help going forward. I have looked at some, and:

1. For districts that exist now and did before, I like what GERNPL has done at {{Kathmandu District}} (diff).
2. For districts that no longer exist, we should list VDCs and municipalities of the time, and make no mention of the new ones; since the district was gone when the new system came in. {{Nawalparasi District}} is an existing example.
3. For new districts, we should list rural and urban municipalities and make no mention of the old VDCs or municipalities (if any). The old divisions were before their time, so they need not bother with them. {{Eastern Rukum District}} seems like the template to follow.Thoughts?Pinging SS49 who's been known to edit the templates. I think VDCs should be listed only with the former two districts: Nawalparasi & Rukum. All other districts including four new districts shouldn't be listed former VDCs with it's templates because those VDCs are already a part of new formed Municipality/Rural Municipality. For example: Jalpachilaune was a VDC with 48 kmsq of area which had many Villages and the headquarter was in a remote village but now Jalpachilaune is just a small town (neighborhood) in Triyuga municipality. Now Jalpachilaune doesn't represent all of 48 kmsq of area. Now Jalpachilaune is a part of ward no. 16 in Triyuga. If anybody want to know about former VDCs he can check Former administrative units of Nepal. As mentioned by Raju Babu, all former VDCs are now parts of either Rural or Urban municipalities so these former VDCs should not be listed in the district templates. Should list current municipalities and rural municipalities and district headquarters. ~SS49~ {talk} 12:49, 29 May 2020 (UTC)

The templates' function is to link related articles together. We need a template to link the former VDCs. I think putting them into a historical section of existing templates would be just the right amount of work necessary. If consensus is reached against inclusion of former VDCs in the district templates, we will need separate sub-templates for each district. VDCs are a significant part of the history of any district, except the four new ones. So, I would favour including them in the existing templates, marking them properly as historical. I noticed that you reverted my edits at Manisha Koirala. In that edit, I changed the word Neplaese to Nepali. I believe it should be Nepali. You said Nepalese is the standard term on enwiki, can you direct me to a discussion that led to this change (as being the standard term).

@CAPTAIN MEDUSA: "Nepali" is a recent trend affected by the Indo-Aryan demonym usage for Nepal (Nepali is more generally used for the language in English). Nepalese has been the standard adjective/demonym in English and on this Knowledge since the beginning as is evident by the categories on the page itself. @CAPTAIN MEDUSA: Talking about this with Wikimedians of Nepal members and I do personally agree with them, "Nepalese" is the standard English language term used formally wide across the nation such as in Nepalese passport, Nepalese rupee, etc. while "Nepali" is frequently used these days informally. Moreover, from the Nepali point of view, "Nepali" is correct, but from English point of view, "Nepalese" is preferred as it possesses the English language word syntax. I think cats on this project use "Nepalese", so new cats should follow that, and any movement toward "Nepali" would require a massive CFD or an RFC. That is just for consistency among cats, so there is no way that automatically translates into article space consensus in favour of "Nepalese". The two words are synonyms and are mostly interchangeable. I think it's not necessary to make an edit specifically to change from one to another unless it would be confusing or in error. If the majority of the sources use "Nepali" as the Cap'n claims is the case with Manisha Koirala, then that may be a case where switching to "Nepali" may be justified. If Gotitbro disagrees, I think standard WP:BRD for local consensus should be the way to go, in absence of any overriding global one.. Nepali politicians, just like any other, say all the things all the time, I don't think just that fact makes it official or correct. I think there is a general movement toward "Nepali" even in International media, but I am not basing that on any data. I am not aware of any guideline which would justify favouring one over the other, and if there were actually an attempt to get Knowledge to favour one usage over another, I think the result would be something similar to datevar/engvar/citevar. I think "Nepalese" is correct in English language. "Nepali" is adjective/demonym in Nepali language. In Nepali language we say Japani for people from Japan but in English we say Japanese. Nepalese is English translation of Nepali. ~SS49~ {talk} 11:43, 4 June 2020 (UTC)

The first known use of "Nepali" to mean "Inhabitant of Nepal" goes back to 1882, according to Merriam-Webster. So, it's not true that "Nepali" is a neologism, or just a Nepali/Sanskritic word which is properly translated into English as "Nepalese". The -i suffix isn't something unheard of in English; there's Pakistani (is there Pakistanese?) and Azeri, and those two are just off the top of my head. Regards! Found beautiful and worth skimming conversation going here. As for the words, both words are possibly interchangeable. However, Nepalese has been consistently used in most of the wiki articles of/related to Nepal. For the common understanding and commonness 'Nepalese' has been accepted. Although the word 'Nepali' is generally seen in current trends, Nepalese is frequently and mostly used. I don't see why this should be argued more as both the words have no dissimilar meanings.

More, the word Nepali will be accepted as this conversation will slightly lighten the issue.

Hallo, Nd12052010 seems to have misunderstood how navboxes work, and has included the full code for a Pokhara template into articles such as Lamachaur, Pokhara, Amarsingh Chowk, and presumably all the others included in what I've now created as {{Pokhara}} navbox, which I made by lifting the code from Lamachaur, Pokhara. I hope what I've done is helpful, and I've fixed that one article, but there is still a lot of sorting out to be done, by this editor or helpful others. There are also a lot of spelled-out stubs, as if they;ve used "subst:Pokara-geo-stub", when stub templates should never be subst'd. Too late at night, here, for me to do any more now. Thank you BrownHairedGirl, I think they came here to move Province No. 5 that was officially named today. They went with Lumbini Province, which is inconsistent with the rest of our articles but objectively a superior choice I think. They likely noticed that the rest of the articles were using "Pradesh" and moved the ones they could find. It seems they are done, and I doubt they'll return. So, I'll revert rest of their moves, which, you're correct, should not have been done without discussion, as it requires an organised effort to update everything after any such moves. This will have the Lumbini Province as an odd one out for the time being. But considering the resources at our disposal vs the number of things that are urgent on WikiProject Nepal, I think that's ok. The article Christianity in Nepal needs a thorough rewriting. It is currently entirely based on Christian missionary sources and is extremely slanted in favor of Christianity (even citing that Christians would constitute 10% of the population while according to census they are 1.4%). There is a user who guards the article impeding any modification and the addition of problem tags. Second oli cabinet and Third oli cabinet are not different and the only difference is they come under second premiership and third premiership respectively as mentioned above. The old Sadbhawana Council has broken infinitely many times. They were led by Rajemdra Mahato, Anil Jha, Anandi Devi, Laxman Lal Karna, Sarita Giri,etc. On every member, there was a party but unauthorized. Knowledge has articles on them. Many of these parties had no any place in country politics or elections and they remained in shadow. Some of these splinter groups were unable to be registered at Election commission. This includes the Anandi Devi factions. These Sadbhawana Parties broke and meged almost every year till 2017. Hence, they are not clearly notable. Even see the view count if these articles to get a clear image. These articles lack proper citations. Please share your valuable views on Talk: Nepal Sadbhawana Party. I don't think that will work. A VDC is not the same as a village. There are usually many villages in a VDC. And all VDCs are notable per WP:NGEO but not all villages are. So, converting them to villages would reduce the articles' scope and make them non-notable. VDCs are a historical entity which are Knowledge notable irrespective of current status. I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Knowledge. The idea is that it takes something like

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Can anybody provide a reliable source to settle once and for the question of Gopal Gurung's nationality citizenship or even his place of birth (currently listed as Darjeeling)? It was listed as Indian for a long time, which seemed reasonable based on birth in India, but people have repeatedly changed it to Nepalese without citing a source. I've been reverting it but finally realized that there isn't a source there to support a claim of Indian nationality either, so I've removed that. Quality assessments by Knowledge editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Knowledge:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present. I'm not familiar with Nepalese naming customs, however I'm wondering to differentiate the different articles (or potential articles) of Gyanendra Bahadur Karki. The current Gyanendra Bahadur Karki (born 1966) article is for former member of the 2nd Nepalese Constituent Assembly. However, there is also Gyanendra Bahadur Karki (1930-1992) who was a former foreign minister (see: Minister of Foreign Affairs (Nepal) at #14) and there's also the Hon'ble Justice Mr. Gyanendra Bahadur Karki (born 1950) who was a former justice of the Supreme Court of Nepal; source: Of course, the obvious differentiation would be by birth year, but I didn't know if there were other names these individuals may be known by that would help. There has been informations all over the place about Rail Transport in Nepal. It's because the non existence of the right page they belong to, which is Rail Transport in Nepal, after realizing this I've put an effort to rebuild this once existing page. It's so inappropriate to redirect such a broad subject as Country's Rail Transportation to a Train operating company which runs only on one line. How can a country wide transport subject can be merged to a passenger service providing single company ? To fix this I tried to bring together all the scattered articles in wrong pages to the right page, first transferring railway transport related topics to Department of Railway's page as it's the authority in charge, then I found this page https://en.wikipedia.org/Rail_transport_by_country where Nepal's link is directed to all transportation page while other countries have a separated Rail Transportation page, some of which have no railway at all till date ? So it's hard to comprehend why Nepal Rail Transportation can't have it's page where all the history,current status and future project could be consisted ? As I was working towards it by moving all articles currently everywhere to the proper page, next day I come to take it further it's all gone ! Now have to start it all over again ! If it's going meet the same fate what's the point of trying to rebuild. Not sure if this WikiProject is active, but I'll try anyways. There's been some recent activity might I say with some editors changing "Nepalese" to "Nepali" without discussion/consensus. The articles involved include: Nepalese rupee, Nepalese Civil War, Nepalese royal massacre, Nepalese Americans, Nepalese Armed Forces, Nepalese passport, Nepalese cuisine, Nepalese Army Air Service, and Nepalis.

User:Uzzwalkhanal was blocked regarding this after a discussion at WP:ANI (diff) raised by another editor.

Is there local WikiProject consensus on this? Does this need to be changed reflecting something that has changed recently? I'm completely unaware of this topic. Fork99 (talk) 02:13, 15 October 2023 (UTC)

I was aware of the incident. It looked more a problem of conduct to me. People who are not willing to slow down and discuss get blocked even if they are right; he probably is not.I am not aware of pre-existing consensus. The words are almost always interchangeable. Rise of nationalism, same as elsewhere, coupled with wider educational opportunities and access to the internet, means more people than usual will be trying to change "Nepalese" to "Nepali", as the former was a name given by the British without asking the Nepalese, and the latter is a Nepali word adopted without modification. Some populist minister tried to popularise "Nepali" a few years ago. That's the only recent change I know of, apart from the ongoing and accelerated in the past decade, general movement of the West, toward respecting other peoples.We don't have Nepali editors regularly active in the project. Any attempt at consensus either suffers from a lack of participation, or participation from editors who know nothing about the topic, or participation from editors pushing their own POVs. • When I asked for page protection of some pages regarding this issue, they were protected, however the admin told me that this issue may require a Request for Comment (RfC). I think it should be up to the editor(s) who want the change to start an RfC, but we know that they want to edit war first before any attempt at discussion after the fact. And anyways, the original user is blocked and seemingly has no interest in asking for an unblock, so can't discuss in the RfC without using sockpuppet accounts anyway. Using the "case insensitive" option produces better results, but "Nepalese Civil War" is far more common than "Nepali". There's been a continuing argument on Talk:Momo (food) § Plural of Momo over which plural form of "momo" in English should be used in the article. wikt:momo has had similar issues. I would appreciate input from anyone who is able to make constructive contributions based on reliable sources, rather than screaming at me. I've never seen momos referred to as anything but "momos". No menu or review I've read has used "momo" as the plural.

It's no different from how English handles some Italian words. Italian panino/panini ⇒ English "panini"/"paninis". Likewise, biscotto/biscotti ⇒ "biscotti"/"biscottis". Maybe to some people this is controversial, but it's life. And it isn't a matter of English linguist imperialism. When other languages borrow nouns, they also mostly apply their own plurals. My favorites are Arabic borrowings from French and English, to which native internal structural changes are applied: "bank"/"banks" ⇒ bank/bunūk, "film"/"films" ⇒ film/aflām. Italian, conversely, doesn't add anything at all: film/film. Nope, neither filmi nor films. Maybe that's how they handle these arguments: they throw up their hands and say "Forget it, we're doing it neither way." Largoplazo (talk) 03:48, 28 January 2024 (UTC)

Specifically, it hides all of the contents of the talk page for mobile users, unless they click the "Learn more about this page" button, which is normally used to hide stuff about what WikiProjects a page belongs to that appear at the top of a talk page, but not the talk page discussions themselves. Please fix this template, or remove the use of it altogether; please recall that more English Knowledge page views occur on mobile than on desktop browsers, and this has consistently been the case for close to four years now. Specifically, I am trying to locate evidence that a party even exists whose WP:COMMONNAME is Janata Dal (Samajbadi Prajatantrik). The page Keshar Jung Rayamajhi also mentions this party, but the single source provided failed verification, as I mention at the talk page discussion above. If people have evidence that a party exists by this name, please provide it here or at the discussion above. Otherwise, please provide any thoughts you have on how this happened— is it a hoax? Hi, I want to Inform to this project members that the Highway numbers in Nepal is corrected recently and now there are 80 National Highway in Nepal.
