The land the park stands on today was originally forested grazing land mainly used for pig farming. Woodthorpe Grange mansion was built in 1874 as the family home of industrialist Henry Ashwell. In 1889, the Nottingham Suburban Railway was built through the estate, running from north to south across

A reminder of the days when the Nottingham Suburban Railway ran through the park a tunnel. The railway was opened in 1889 and was mostly built to serve the brickworks of nearby Mapperley and Thorneywood, although passenger trains also ran. By 1901 passenger services were dwindling with competition from the start of electric tram service into Nottingham and ceased completely thirty years later. The brickworks traffic continued until 1951 when the line was finally closed.
