A long spear, overlaid with gold, formed the figure of the cross by means of a transverse bar laid over it. On the top of the whole was fixed a wreath of gold and precious stones; and within this, the symbol of the Saviour’s name, two letters indicating the name of Christ by means of its initial characters, the letter P being intersected by X in its centre: and these letters the emperor was in the habit of wearing on his helmet at a later period. From the cross-bar of the spear was suspended a cloth, a royal piece, covered with a profuse embroidery of most brilliant precious stones; and which, being also richly interlaced with gold, presented an indescribable degree of beauty to the beholder. This banner was of a square form, and the upright staff, whose lower section was of great length, of the pious emperor and his children on its upper part, beneath the trophy of the cross, and immediately above the embroidered banner." 1133: 345:, which was erected just three years after the battle. If Eusebius' oath-confirmed account of Constantine's vision and the role it played in his victory and conversion can be trusted, then a grand opportunity for the kind of political propaganda that the Arch was built to present was missed. Many historians have argued that in the early years after the battle, the Emperor had not yet decided to give clear public support to Christianity, whether from a lack of personal faith or because of fear of religious friction. The arch's inscription does say that the Emperor had saved the 2251: 1495: 1373: 440: 432: 2241: 1733: 1301: 2183: 1443: 1765: 1568: 2303: 1933: 1853: 1843: 1823: 1663: 1588: 1485: 37: 2513: 2175: 1923: 1803: 1251: 1973: 1785: 1538: 314: 2733: 1163: 2165: 2115: 2031: 2621: 2333: 2313: 2231: 1745: 1173: 2769: 1508: 2673: 1578: 1518: 1413: 330: 2713: 2581: 2271: 1913: 1833: 1643: 1363: 1333: 1321: 1281: 1153: 2221: 2057: 1963: 1813: 1465: 1423: 1271: 1241: 1223: 2723: 2703: 2353: 2323: 1775: 1755: 1653: 1455: 1405: 1311: 1143: 2125: 2085: 1795: 1713: 1703: 1598: 1528: 1433: 1193: 2693: 2533: 2523: 2293: 2145: 1723: 2683: 2653: 2261: 2013: 2003: 1993: 2503: 2281: 1903: 1883: 1863: 2663: 2493: 2067: 1983: 2077: 1693: 1673: 1475: 2641: 2571: 2201: 2047: 1943: 1608: 2757: 504: 2561: 2095: 234:, Eusebius gives a detailed account of a vision and stresses that he had heard the story from the emperor himself.
