Units of Mounted Rifle Volunteers, later termed Light Horse Volunteers (LHVs), were also raised among farming and foxhunting communities, to carry out reconnaissance for the RVCs. The LHVs were less expensively dressed and less socially exclusive than the Yeomanry, but they occupied an anomalous position between them and the Rifle Volunteers, and most were shortlived.
