He obtained a Medical Degree in 1974. Auger completed post-graduate training from 1978 to 1983, also at Laval University, in General Surgery, and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

In 1996, Auger was posted to the staff of the
Surgeon General, as Director of Medical Treatment Services, and later Chief of Staff. In 1998, Col Auger was promoted to Brigadier-General, and appointed Surgeon General. He remained in the position until his retirement from the military in January 2000.
