53: 412: 771: 419: 145:. The iron making furnaces were located in areas that had deposits of iron ore and limestone, forests to supply wood to make charcoal, and water power to operate the bellows. In the 1850s, the local iron works faced increased competition from Northern furnaces using anthracite coal to produce iron that could be easily transported by rail. 152:. The furnace was operated until around 1850. Although the furnace has partially collapsed, parts of it are over 20 ft (6.1 m) tall. In addition to the furnace, the road bed, a flat unloading area above the furnace, and heaps of ore, charcoal, and slag remain on the site. 831: 655: 495: 640: 620: 545: 540: 520: 510: 480: 691: 605: 590: 575: 550: 530: 525: 500: 445: 435: 846: 778: 630: 610: 600: 535: 505: 485: 470: 465: 460: 450: 349: 625: 580: 570: 555: 490: 475: 455: 645: 635: 615: 595: 565: 515: 712: 650: 560: 440: 660: 686: 676: 585: 696: 681: 52: 836: 342: 851: 841: 362: 335: 717: 812: 740: 735: 401: 391: 805: 745: 386: 148:
