However, it was the greatest irony of Kay's life that the landscapes that gave him such pleasure and shaped his life also took away the life of his son, Archibald Alexander, who was aged 12 and his cousin George Whitelaw who was aged 56 in a drowning accident at Port Appin in 1907. In future years, Kay became leader of the Callander Boys' Brigade and designed the community war memorial after The Great War. 280: 36: 360:, and he died at home at 16 Kensington Gate on 6 September 1935.
