Known locally, and still remembered, as Jac Blac, John was, it is said, captured in Africa in about 1742 by a member of the Wynne family of
Ystumllyn, and brought home there. He was, reputedly, eight years old at the time. During his time at Ystumllyn he learned fluent Welsh and English and was
