After graduation, Warfield spent the war years (1941-1947) employed by the Office of War Information in Washington, D.C. and San Francisco. While in San Francisco, she met Willard Van Valkenburgh, who was a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy. They married in the fall of 1947 and moved to Washington, D.C.
