It has erupted in 1690, 1853, 1859, 1933 and several times between 1957 and 2008. The previous eruption took place on March 4, 2007, when a 1.5 km (0.93 mi) high plume of ash was emitted that trailed for several hundred kilometers into the neighboring waters. 194: 860:, Kitanodai Airfield on the northeast coast with a 4,000 ft (1,219 m) runway, and Suribachi Airfield, an auxiliary base in the center of the south coast with two runways.
