The first volume is generally for intermediate players as it does not involve the use of thumb position, while the second volume, which includes the use of thumb position as well as other advanced technique, is for more advances players. These did not retain the didactic aspect of Chopin's work, however, since the difficulty and the technique used varies within a given piece.
