Halaby was born to a Palestinian Christian father, Jiryes (George) Nicola Halaby, and a Russian Orthodox mother, Olga Akimovna Khudobasheva. Her parents met when her father was studying in Russia at the Kyiv Theological Academy, and moved back between Jerusalem and
