408:(Jurisprudence) in 1909 (Second class) and a BCL in 1910 (Third Class) He was called to the bar by the Middle Temple on 17 November 1910 and commenced practice at the Cape bar in 1911. From 1920 to 1935 he was a Parliamentary draftsman, and in 1927 took silk. In 1935 he became a judge of the Cape Provincial Division and was raised to the Appelate Division in 1939. Oxford awarded him its DCL (honoris causa) in 1953. He was Chancellor of the University of Cape Town from 1951 to 1966. In the opinion of a later Chief Justice, L.C.
