From 1920 to 1935 he was a Parliamentary draftsman, and in 1927 took silk. In 1935 he became a judge of the Cape Provincial Division and was raised to the Appelate Division in 1939. Oxford awarded him its DCL (honoris causa) in 1953. He was Chancellor of the University of Cape Town from 1951 to 1966. In the opinion of a later Chief Justice, L.C. Steyn, Centlivres was 'well versed in the old authorities his strength lay in the realm of statute law and case law'.
