The military order was also quite restrained, as the troops were never actually deployed on the streets (the full National Guard deployment on the streets of Cambridge Maryland in June of 1963, is probably more historically significant). I think the real significance of this event is the long-term effect on government policy, including the Civil Rights Act (as well as the long-term effect on movement culture and strategy, which I plan to write more about on the page).
