The Tawakonis' name translates to "river bend among red sand hills." Their name has been also spelled as Touacara, Tahwaccaro, Tahuacaro, or Towoccaro, Tehuacana, as well as Towakoni. Some French explorers called them the "Three Canes" or Troiscanne.
