Edgewater, was founded in 1843, the area was dedicated more to rural and recreational pursuits during the 1800s. Around 1900, by which time the area was officially designated as Edgewater, the borough was firmly involved in industrial production. With access to abundant labor from Manhattan and situated on the Hudson River with deep water piers, Edgewater was well situated for shipping. Among the industries that would prosper in the first half of the 20th century, were Ford Motor Company, Unilever, Valvoline Oil Co. and Archer-Daniels-Midland. In the 1960s the character of Edgewater began changing from industrial to residential. The factories had closed. As a condominiums were built along the Hudson where industry had formerly operated, the population of Edgewater grew rapidly. As seen in the population box on this page, it had remained mostly in the 4,000 to 5,000 range from 1930 to 1990. According to the Census Bureau estimate from 2007, the population has roughly doubled from that range since 1990.
