The process of atoll formation may take as long as 30,000,000 years to occur.

I agree with Jjron - I don't think that the illustration gets it quite right, and I think the land as a whole generally subsides, but the coral builds up atop the shells of the old coral to keep at the proper depth, forming the ridge.
