during two sessions ss a member of the house of representatives and was also twice elected and served during two sessions as a member of the senate ot the stateof Minnesota Tn 1870 he was appointed United States chief justice for the territory of New Mexico by President Grant and fulfilled the duties of that office untilhe resigned on account of ill health in 1873 He then returned to Austin Minn In 1885 he was elected prosecuting attorney of Mower county Minnesota and held that office for four successive terms until 1893 In July 1893 he came to the city of Portland at which place he practiced his profession until his death.
