Born to Irish immigrants—his father a streetcar conductor and his mother a seamstress—Spain attended St. Brendan's Parochial School and Archbishop Quigley Preparatory Seminary. His classmates included notable figures such as priest and author Andrew Greeley and "Vatican Banker" Paul Marcinkus.
