On 3 May 1909 the Midland Railway opened a new line of 3Âľ miles in length between Water Orton and Kingsbury which enabled express trains to avoid the severe curve on the previous route near Whitacre.

In 1982 an appeal was launched, supported by the Railway Development Society, to raise funds to build a new station which was estimated to cost around ÂŁ100,000 (equivalent to ÂŁ445,800 in 2023).
