Neal had a stroke at work in 1960, and required months of hospitalization and rehabilitation to play piano again. She retired from teaching in 1966, and she died in 1978, in Charlotte, at the age of 77. She and the other Five Pearls are honored annually by Zeta Phi Beta chapters at their "Founders'
