people but a secular band. But either way, they are safe to listen to and most likely are christian. But the sad truth is many "christian bands" somtimes use that to get somewhere. Or they say their christian bands but nobody knows it. To me, if you're christian, you should want people to know that you are and therefore it would be evident. However, I will not judge someone for the lack of their representation. So that is that. - JOE COWAN All of the members in Emery are
Christian, but the band is reluctant to be labelled a Christian rock band. Although the band has a Christian outlook and mission, their concern is that being labeled as "Christian" will hinder their ability to reach their audience. In an interview with now defunct HardcoreChristian.com, Devin Shelton stated, I know for a while it was a big fad to like have a lot of Christian bands were just Christian guys in a band so I mean first and foremost we’re Christians above anything else ... obviously ... the band is going to come and go and it will be over one day and that’s just the way it goes. It’s just like any other occupation. We are Christians first and foremost and therefore it has to impact what we do everyday as our job and in our lives so I mean… everyday we’ve got tons of Christian fans that their like, "Hey you guys are the best Christian band blah blah blah or one of the best or whatever," and that is fine, but we gave up on trying to draw that line because it’s pretty much you have to get out of the stigma of being labeled a Christian band where non-Christian people will listen to you because if you play in only Christian venues or you play with all Christian bands all the time you’re kind of shooting yourself in the foot for as far as having a career goes and even as ministry speaking ... ... I mean there is a place for that. There are bands out there like worship bands and stuff that are great at that and I think they are called to do that but we definitely are not called to do that. We tried it, we played in churches before and we have played with a lot of Christian bands several times and we felt really really out of place, we kind of felt like, it was almost like God was saying this isn’t what you guys are supposed to be doing. Not that it was anything bad or anything like that but we just didn’t have that spirit of fulfillment that we feel like we do have now because we relate so much better to people, to crowds like this than we do youth group crowds. I found this here and they Say it themselves. JOE COWAN
961:-You can't just state that an argument is "not-well thought-out" without giving any reasons. Or for that matter claim there are spelling errors without pointing any out. (But in your defense I do see one) Anyway, spelling isn't as important as content. Your latest post had as much relevance to the subject at hand as saying "well you're just dumb" as a retaliation to an insult. The above discussion doesn't help your point. If anything it helps mine as Devin talks about the stigma of being labeled "a Christian band," although Emery as members are Christians. In that light it would be more accurate if the lead said "all the members are Christians" than if it had Christian as an adjective describing what type of band they are. I think a band that feels the label is a "stigma" would think that it is sufficient to have their religious views mentioned later in the article, but it seems, for whatever reason you're bound and determined to have it front and center. I feel this is a misrepresentation of how the article should be setup but I'm honestly done with discussing it. I don't really know how things are moderated around here but I'm confident that it will be straitened out in the end by someone who can assess the situation correctly.
909:-Really? You need the band's religion mentioned in the lead (which you can't spell) even "regardless of what the band think"? Are you crazy? Let me say I'm a devoted Christian but I'm really turned off by people smearing the label places where it isn't needed! Especially a band like this where there isn't a single explicit reference to religion in any of their four records. Also "Christian" is not a genre of music, unless you're talking about the contemporary pop praise music with very clear religious references. Between their lack of any religious references, and the numerous times the band has steered clear from being titled "christian", it's unfair to say they represent christian rock! On what basis?! Tooth and Nail records has also stated on numerous occations that they aren't a "christian" label, at least not entirely, and they don't want the misconception. Notably though many bands associated with tooth and nail and emery do take on a more religious image.

This has been a very tough decision for me, since Emery has been an important part of my life for over a decade. I'm not saying I will never do anything else with Emery, but things change and life goes on, no matter how much I will miss it. It is my opinion that if they are considered "Christian-rock", that could be included in the lead of this article. However, having a line about their religious views seems out of place. If you go check out the
Beatles page, you won't find "One is atheist, one is hindu...". Maybe there is a place for
691:
I agree in some sense. I think what Emery is trying to say is they are a
Christian band, but not the same type of Christian band as say... Kutless or Falling Up. They don't want to be distributed only to the Christian market. It's kinda like shooting themselves in the foot. To get their point across
686:
Hmm, sounds like a good discussion. Emery is signed to a christian label (more or less) but to say Emery is or isn't christian may be difficult. We don't know if they are saved truly for only God can look at the heart, so we can only go by actions. I would probably call them roaring lambs- christian
678:

This sentence seems out of place and grammatically incorrect. While I'm not questioning the validity of the facts, it seems as if the sentence implies that the majority of the members were also members of the other bands, while this may be true, my suspicion is that individual members of Emery were
1123:
Not exactly sourceable right now, but they do seem to be developing a fondness for breakdowns as of late (most noticeably on "The Cheval Glass"), and their recent signing to Solid State
Records indicates that they may be heading in a more metal direction. No need to add it in the article just yet,

Chopper did quit the band. In a statement on the bands official website he said- "Yo dudes and dudettes! Chopper here. I'm gonna be taking off. I feel like it's time for me to move on to the next phase in my life. I don't exactly know what I'm gonna be getting into, but it'll be rad, for sure.
893:
We could, but I don't think it's necessary. Not all
Christian bands are made entirely of Christian musicians. Emery in particular is in a field where the bands contain a mix of Christian and non-Christian members. In the case of this band, someone keeps deleting the Christian adjective from the
665:
Ok, I will clear this up. Emery does have some
Christian elements in their songs, as I have both of their CD's, but, the main reason Emery gets put in the Christian genre is because of their label. Emery is signed to Tooth and Nail.. which states on their website- "Tooth & Nail Records, an

Christian bands, so, Tooth and Nail is basically a Christian based label, and any band signed to them is often put into the Christian genre. Im not saying Emery isn't a Christian band though, they're lyrics definitely reflect Christian
692:(be it to convert, mend problems, help out, etc), distributing to only the Christian market wouldn't get their point across. It would be like trying to go to a Democratic convention and trying to find all the conservatives... Or like going to the desert to find water. It would just be hard.
1059:
Josh, Dave, Matt, and Toby would like to thank Devin for being one of the greatest guys we have ever met. He is and always will be one of our best friends. That will never change. We miss him already. Also, we definitely hope to work with Devin again in the future so keep your eyes open.

Insulting my spelling, which is correct, it's just not
American, has not won you any intelligence points. And if you're going to throw stones at the spelling of others, you might want to run your writing through a spell-checker first. Your argument is similarly not-well thought-out.
983:
The discussion above does prove my point. They are Christians who don't want to be labelled a Christian band. So either we restore the original wording: all Christians or we leave the Christian adjective in there and either link it to the genre or the faith. Doesn't matter to me.
805:
Hey peoples. Im not sure how to use wikipedia, but on thursday, 7 june 2007 at the Arena in Brisbane, Emery played 3 new songs from their upcoming album. Two of these were titled as followed: "The party song" and "Rock And Roll".

Emery is 100% a christian band, I even asked Toby, lead singer, on Oct. 4, 2006 at the Electric Factory in Philly. He said they were all christians and that they were a christian band. He even preached to us!
