That said, if you find the opening line misleading (which I don't) and you wanted to add something like, "... but tends to be supportive", or "... but is supported by the majority", or "... but has overwhelming support", I would have no objection, as long as whatever you add is supported by a more detailed treatment in the body of the article, and is well sourced.

I don't agree. If someone said, "the income of Americans varies widely", I would take that as a true, and unsurprising statement. It just means some people are very poor and some are very rich. It doesn't say anything about income distribution. If they followed that up with, "the fifty richest
